TN : 2009 Chablis 1er Cru Domaine Barat

I ventured into my cellar yesterday afternoon in search of a nice Puligny-Montrachet to accompany a large piece of fresh halibut. As I headed toward the bin I passed another bin which contained my lake cottage “go to” white wine, and selected one of these : 2009 Chablis 1er Cru Cote de Lechet from Domaine Barat.

Lightly grilled the halibut on the deck but it was too chilly to eat out there, so we dined indoors.

Natural cork enclosure. Pale yellow colour; aromas of tree fruits, coupled with a slight note of pleasing mushroom ; medium bodied…nicely balanced acidity…citrus and mineral…pear and light melon flavours…an extremely long and pleasing finish.

Domaine Barat is source whose modestly priced wines I have enjoyed over the past number of years. The domaine, with several generations of family owners, comprises about 80 acres of vineyards in Chablis and several Premier Cru locations. As I said above I take a box of these to the cottage for easy Summer sipping - kind of our house white.

Played several CD’s during dinner; music from Ben Webster, John Lewis, Billie Holiday and some solo guitar by Joe Pass.

Just had the regular 2009 Chablis from this producer and found it very enjoyable at about $20. It was very closed down at first, and I was about to write it off, but after an hour of air it really opened up. Was even better the second day.
