TN: 2009 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico

  • 2009 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico - Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG (10/27/2015)
Shocked at how great this wine is…especially for $15!! From an ancient 12th Century Tuscany hill town(wish I had known about this 2 weeks ago!) 2000 ft in elevation……this CC is SO classic to me! Dark and creamy mix of sweet and ripe, as well as dried berry fruits….silky and smooth mouthfeel…gorgeous! Seems to be the perfect balance of ripeness and dryness……then we have the classics show up….subtle tar, earth tones, dried tobacco leaves, leather, licorice……all SO nicely integrated….freshened and lifted by sour cherry skin, blood orange, pomegranate acidity…THEN……don’t forget the pretty florals….dried roses, lavender, mint, bay leaf…….VERY impressed here!! And not even the Riserva??? WOW!! (93 pts.)

I’m not sure who the distributor is for Volpaia, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen it here in MN.
(We also missed a few vintages of Felsina too)
