TN: 2008 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast (USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast)

  • 2008 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (4/12/2010)
Strong nose with clear Sonoma Coast characteristics showing some pine like herbals among dark red fruits. The palate really shows the large inclusion of Willow Creek vineyard fruit in it being darker in flavor and richer than the SC bottle has been in years past. Strong cranberry and pomegranate flavors, big and broad across the middle with juicy acidity. Big, forward and not looking like something to cellar real long. Yummy drink right now and great value.

How long?

I’m sure it will cellar for 5-8 years. I just mean it doesn’t need to unwind and probably won’t improve in bottle so drink 'em if ya got 'em.

Cool. Everybody knows I am a baby killer anyway.

I’ve been sitting on all my R-M’s for 3-5 years, which I have found to improve them greatly (although the 05 Occidental I had recently was a mess and went down the drain).

Maybe it is time to revisit a youngster.

The Occidentals are for immediate drinking to me though the 07 might need a year or two. They are very forward. Drink the Occ and SC while you let your Summas unwind is my mantra.

I would agree with paul on the 3-5 year window. I have been drinking through some of my 06’s and they have been really nice, all the way down to the SC.

The only 07 I have personally cracked was the SC and it is not close to being ready yet. The 08’s might be better for early drinking, more so than the 07’s.

Thanks for the note Cris. I’ve been staring at these longingly, as defenders of what remains of my 07 allocation.

While I’ve not had a lot of RM’s, say 3-4 times max. This one was very enjoyable. It was fruity without being over the top for me and it did come off as being over the top alcohol wise (I don’t recall the ABV) . As I said I don’t have a lot of experience, but I think this would drink better between now and 3-5 years. Like Cris, I don’t see it making old bones.
