TN: 2008 Prince Florent de Merode Corton-Bressandes

2nd of two bottles purchased from WTSO in 2011 at $55/btl- both excellent. Researched the producer and just now realized Domaine de la Romanée-Conti leased this plot (as well as their plots in Corton Clos Du Roi and Corton Les Renardes) at the end of 2008 when the prince died and is now making a Corton from the three vineyards for $400-500 a bottle…

  • 2008 Prince Florent de Merode Corton-Bressandes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru (2/6/2015)
Clear medium ruby color. Legs in the glass. Clean aromas, medium intensity, secondary/primary, developing- notes of fig, dusty earth, lavender, black tea, allspice berries. Dry on the palate, medium+ acid, medium fine tannins, medium body and alcohol. Nice intensity on the palate showing dusty red fruits (fig and cherry), earth, cracked pepper, floral, hints of spice- nicely melded and layered, with finesse and freshness. Nice presence on the mid-palate and finish, showing smooth fine tannins and a full 30-40 seconds of length. Excellent and showing very well. (93 pts.)

I remember paying $32 a bottle for the 1998 just after getting out of the military in 2005. Prices for these wines used to be so much more reasonable. This is a deal at anything less than $75 now…too bad.

Kirk, I just bought a Domaine d’Ardhuy (a producer I’ve come to really like) 2010 Corton Clos Du Roi for $60 or so, so all hope’s not lost!

Looks like Prince Florent de Merode (now DRC) had a lot of the older vines from these Grand Cru vineyards. I’m sure this is old news for some.

These were a screaming deal at $55. Wish I had held the second bottle for longer, if only for the historical significance of them being the last vintage.

I just snagged some 2002’s on winebid.com last night. I’m looking forward to tasting them with some real age on them. Has anyone had any of these with 20+ years on them??

I’ve had 2 bottles of the 1971 both of which were beautiful wines. Also a beautiful 1978 Clos du Roi and an unfortunately corked 1983 (I don’t recall the vineyard).

Awesome…then these will be going deep in the cellar.

I have a couple of the PM clos du roi 2005…opened one last yr…way too young…Also tasted the '66 or '69 (can’t remember exact vintage) a couple years ago…anyways, way too old!

Just had the 1976 last night, leaner than the 1971 but the aromatics were beautiful. Kept changing and developing as the night progressed. It’s fading now, no it’s back! now it’s falling apart, no it got good again! Excellent match with the duck breast at The Milling Room.
