Decided to head to the Wandering Dog Wine Bar in Solvang and try a couple Sauvignon Blancs that they were pouring. I honestly believe the Sauv Blancs from the Santa Ynez Valley have come a long way in the past ten years and producers such as Dragonette, Star Lane and Storm are leading the charge. The biggest changes seem to be that they are being picked with lower sugars and higher acids with the combination of stainless steel and barrel aging giving the wines a more balanced structure, IMO.
2007 Osseus: Beautiful aromatics of grapefruit and green apple opening up into some lime and tropical fruit flavors. The wine was very well balanced and had a welcoming softness to it but still had enough acidity to it to keep it fresh. 89 points.
2008 Dragonette: This wine was wonderful. reminded me a little of something from South Africa. Lots of racy acidity in this one. Tons of grapefruit, lime, lemon curd and melon with a hint of grass. Extremely balanced with the acidity complementing the well structured fruit and mineral elements. Long finish. Would have been nice to have this with fresh oysters. 92 points
