TN: 2008 Château Léoville Barton (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien)

Haven’t had this since release, maybe 6yrs ago, very primary then…now starting to strut its stuff! Great nose! Mix of creme de cassis, blueberry pie, freshly opened bag of Kingsford, dusty cedar, licorice. MAN I love how smooth and silky Bordeaux can be, yet so youthful with structure, power and grace! The fruit is perfect in this…not too sweet, nice dryness and length. The wonderful nose transfers to the palate…also shows purple florals and rocky minerality. Tasty now, but should gain even further within the next 10+yrs. Wish I had more in the cellar. (93 pts.)

Thanks for the update. This was one of my favorite 08s on release.

2002, 2004, and 2008 are really good “off vintages” that will drink substantially earlier than 2000/2005/2010. 2002 and 2004 are drinking very well already. 2008 seemed tougher young but from this note and some others maybe will be accessible in just a few years, a long time before 2010.

The older I get the more I appreciate “off vintages” that start drinking well in the 10-15 year range. Suspect 2012 and 2014 will fit this mold too.
