TN: 2007 Westrey Pinot Noir

  • 2007 Westrey Pinot Noir - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley (10/26/2009)
nose: lovely and nuanced nose of red cherries, earth, spices, with some bits of raspberries. A very pungent nose and the tones waft out of the glass very nicely and the smells become more pronounced as you get your nose closer to the glass

taste: medium+ acidity gives this a very nice spine, but is also fairly pronounced at this time. Well balanced and pretty tones of spice, bits of earth, and dark red cherries work very well together, but the finish is a bit clipped

overall: a pretty young oregon pinot. This seems like it needs another year or two to fully round out and have the acidity calm down a slight bit. The aromatics are really there right off the bat from the initial pour(this was just bottle aired for about an hour). Right now this is a perfect foil for a lot of food, and it should have a fairly open window for a while (89 pts.)

Keith, have you tried any of their other 07 PNs? For most of my preferred OR producers…in 06 I tended to prefer the lower level bottlings and dislike the riper pricier SVDs. The opposite is true for 07. If you prefer a Burg-like style and plenty of acidity, the Westrey QPR is ridiculously good.

great notes Keith. Yet another to recommend this producer. I’m intrigued.

Had the opportunity to visit them earlier this year. Quite nice winery, trying to do very good stuff.

I would say bump to this wine needing at least 2-3 years more bottle age, and bump to the 89 score. Looking forward to their 08s.

Richard, I haven’t had a chance yet to try their SVDs, but am gonna be on the lookout for them. It’ll be interesting to have those to compare against this general bottling. I liked their lower end 06s last year and obviously enjoy this bottling, so I’m now extremely interested in trying their higher end bottlings
