Beautiful bright yellow with a pale tinge of green
Powerful aroma of yeast and brioche can be noted from over a foot away. Closer in, the nose gives up notes of almonds and hazelnuts, baked yellow apples and lemon.
The taste is delicious, the tactile impression immediately a bright star explosion leading to a finely knotted rope of pure Chardonnay fruit flavor. The aftertaste is both pleasant and encouraging of additional tastes.
Really quite fine, no surprise to many readers here.
2008 is different. Much tighter coiled with the combination of power with finesse. 2007 is a very pure finesse version of CdC, drinking really well now.
The 2007 is absolutely magnificent at the moment (had 4 times this year) and just about the best you can do for sub-$150 in Champagne right now. I have basically bought out Los Angeles County (sorry!)
The 2008 is going to be even better but is nowhere NEAR ready to drink (had twice this year). Much tighter and more powerful. This is 3-5 years away at least.
Be careful hanging out with these online enablers. But you should also buy some '04 and '06 if you see it for a reasonable fare
Like Chris, I love the 2007, but it’s the least typical of any Comtes I’ve tried. I originally bought the '07 only because it was a package deal with the '08, but now I’m glad I did.
Had the 2007 tonight, and it was a wonderful match with our gougeres. It smelled like it was going to be quite rich, but on the palate that 2007 acidity put on a laser light show. It was only the last glass, about 90 minutes later, that really fanned out and brought the depth the nose promised. I really enjoyed the wine, and my wife gave it her very highest praise: “this doesn’t suck!”
FYI, we have both really enjoyed 2007 Champagnes. Not fashionable, but then we don’t care about fashion.
I’ve really liked quite a few of the 2007 Chardonnay-based champagnes - including the Comtes and especially the Ruinart. I agree the 2007 Comtes is a bit unusual in that it doesn’t have quite the richness I associate with this cuvee, but I quite like lean champagne so that’s hardly an issue. It’s also drinking well now, like the 2004 (which I think is a generally friendlier version of this wine).
I suspect we’ll see some sales on 2007 champagne around the holiday season and I’ll certainly be a buyer.
I find the 2006 version the most confusing; I’ve had bottle variation from bottles in the same case (including at the Crush tasting a few years ago) with some of the bottles having a lime note I found unpleasant (I’m not a big Dom fan).
I’ve gone thru six bottles of 2007 CdC in the past two months and agree with others who like it. While not as dynamic or as potentially long-lived as the best bottles of ‘06 or ‘08, 2007 CdC is more open and lovely to drink now. I paid $110/per for '07 and am delighted to have them to drink while I wait on '06 and '08.
