2007 Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Sonoma County- USA, California, Sonoma County (7/29/2009)
Last of my bottles and by far the best. Got these before the price hike (thanks WS!) and wish I had more because for 17 bucks this is a fantastic bottle. Bit of a smoky nose to it with dark berries and a bit of chocolate coming through. Full bodied wine with some earth on the palate to go along with the berries. All this leading to a nice somewhat spicy finish with a little bit of drying, grippy tannins and a good bit of acid to balance this out. Solid bottle.
NOSE: american oak; black cherry; strong violets; bitter orange peel; moderately complex. Day 2: slightly spicy; american oak; Milk Duds; otherwise the same, minus the orange peel.
BODY: purple-garnet color of medium-deep depth; medium-full bodied; clear.
TASTE: well-balanced; not alcoholic tasting; black cherry & loganberry; not earthy; a bit sweet, but not jammy; juicy acidity. Day 2: still good acid; non-descript purple/red fruits; a bit sweet (small amount of r.s.?); oak - not offensive; not complex. Overall, a very solid zin. – better than most, really – but just isn’t that exciting - maybe it would be to someone who’s a bigger fan of Zin than I am.
Opened a bottle earlier this year and found it a little fat and overly peppery on the finish. That is, however, the only bottle from this producer that I’ve ever tried, and I’m eager to taste more.
If I could find reason to score it lower, I would … but I have a very systematic way of scoring, and that’s the number that popped out. For my preferences it drinks around 86 or 87 points, maybe … but that can partly be explained by me not being a big zinfandel fan. Seghesio makes a very nice Sangiovese-based blend called “Omaggio” – that’s probably the best Seghesio I’ve had (and I’ve been through a substantial portion of their lineup).
