I am a fan of Patricia Green’s wines; have purchased and drank them over the past 4 vintages. Popped and poured the 07 Croft Vineyard (Eola Hills). 12.5%
The nose is earthy; has almost an organic, lake water aroma. Sort of like my fish tank. (What is that anyway? - I know it is neither TCA nor Brett. Anyone?)
Pomegranate and raspberry flavors. Has a fair zing of acidity/lemon to it. What is surprising is how the flavor drops off and it leaves the tongue a bit numb.
I understand that 2007 presented many challenges in the vineyard. Will be interesting to see how my other PG’s stand up (I have the Estate Old Vine and the Balcombe).
I do tend to like my Pinots with a bit more fruit. The acidity in this, though, seemed to be out of balance with the fruit. The rest of the bottle is heading to the fridge; will re-visit tomorrow.
Thanks for the note. I would think some time will sort this wine out … but I am a fan of 07 … many are not. I suspect this vintage will never work for many people.
Interesting. The 04 Oregon bottling had a weird cat pee smell. Had it on multiple occasions … even with Jim at the winery … but I have never had an explanation for it.
I had a few bottles of 2001 Ojai Pisoni Pinot that had a distinct dirty aquarium water smell and the wine had an odd, off-putting flavor. Other bottles were fine. I recall that Adam had a response as to why but don’t remember the details.
Those bottles were tainted with TCA. I would call you an “idiot” but I don’t want to get off to a bad start on this Board.
People come up with different descriptors for TCA based on their own smell-associations. I happen to think TCA does smell like dank aquarium water mixed with wet cardboard.
I also am a fan of PG and did taste through the '07s at the winery. I can’t say I recall the Croft but I liked the wines across the board and remember liking the Balcombe 1B and Etzel best.
I have only tasted a couple vintages of Croft (I wanna say they started with Croft with either the '04 or '05 vintage) and it seemed to me that the Croft takes on weight and balance with a year or more in bottle. PG releases their wines earlier than many Oregon wineries. Let 'em sit a little. Time will also tell, but I think the '07 vintage is actually better than '06 and '05 generally, despite the fact that there will be more “misses” in '07 than in '05 and '06. This has been said many times elsewhere but I’ll repeat it-if you like silky texture and elegant bright pinot, '07 is for you.
I do not recall it being TCA or Adam describing it as such. Much like I don’t recall our conversation regarding the rose for Perkins’ party being the way you recited it. [suicide.gif] (I love the new smilies).
