TN: 2007 Lucia Syrah Garys' Vineyard (USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands)

  • 2007 Lucia Syrah Garys’ Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (12/27/2009)
Again this year the Garys’ is better out of the gate compared to the Susan’s Hill. Decanted about 3 hours prior to tasting and then this drank best on night two. Big boysenberry fruit on the nose and palate. Complexity is added with some pepper and herbal notes on the palate. Slight woody notes and signs of the oak but nothing obtrusive. I enjoyed the complexity among the big fruit keeping it from being a simple pure fruit Syrah. This should improve in the bottle over the medium term as the notes integrate and the fruit relaxes a bit.

Rock, good work. These are good data points for us Lucia buyers. On my end, I have not tasted the 07s since I visited in June with Jeff and I plan to try one of each within the next few months, as I am opening a # of my 2007 syrahs to see how things stand. I’ll add to the TN action on both Lucias once I have them in the glass.

PS–I found this new TN in CT on the 07 Susan’s Hill.

Tasted by TJolley on 12/27/2009 & rated 97 points: Had with rack of lamb, creamy gorgonzola, and filet mignon creamy gorgonzola, still just as great as it was 2 months ago. Decant for approx. 3 hours to get this wine to its peak.

Thanks for the note Cris, I have one of these on tap for the weekend. I totally agree with the Garys’ being better early on that the Susans’.

Frank, that other note is from the same guy I complained about last week that gave really high scores without a note, maybe he saw that post.

Joe, that’s funny. While the note did not offer much perspective, at least it listed what he ate with it.

Rock, I did open another 750 of 2004 Lucia SH this past weekend and it drank fine, maybe a bit better than the bottle we had @ Vintage but from a perspective of WOTY, it won’t win for me. It’s seemed to have softened up a lot in the last year so I plan to drink my mag next year, along with the 750 and circle back around to the 05-07 bottles again and see where things are standing.
