TN- 2007 Jean-Paul Brun Morgon Vieilles Vignes Terres Dorees

I was in Dallas this past weekend and walked into a small cheese shop to find it well-stocked with some interested wines. This was a bottle I’d been dying to try for a while, so this was the perfect opportunity at $21.

Right off the bat, it’s not giving much. VERY tight, with hints of what could be, but just not moving, so we let it breathe for about an hour before revisiting it. The color had deepened from a light cherry to a darker red, and the nose was really alive with light-colored berries (cherries, raspberries), flowers, earth, and something a little gamey (in a good way). VERY vivid and bright on the palate, with good acidity and a lovely structure, almost flowery and really elegant as it wends its way over your palate, ending with a medium finish.

Delicious, either alone or with food.

Thanks for the note Michel. I was curious about this having tasted a couple of his 07s a few months ago and finding them quite tight as well.

Richard, the bottle needs a good hour sitting open to really shine, but it’s kind of neat to see it develop in the glass.

Good to see some props for JPB. I love this wine. It’s on our list, but that didn’t stop me from buying some for my personal stash. It really needs a few years in bottle, but a decant does wonders. The Fleurie is no slouch either. The '08 Blanc is another winner. Great stuff from wonderful man. Another fun one is the sparking Gamay with some RS. It’s called “FRV 100”. If you say it in French it makes sense.

The Fleurie is no slouch either. The '08 Blanc is another winner. Great stuff from wonderful man. Another fun one is the sparking Gamay with some RS. It’s called “FRV 100”. If you say it in French it makes sense.

LOVE it! FRV100! Too funny! (it means “effervescent”) I’ll have to look for that one.

I just grabbed a 3-pack of the 2008 and some Vissoux, a domaine I’ve never had but wanted to try for a while.

My store carries the Vissoux 07 VV. It is excellent young Beaujolais in a pretty ripe style. Lots of raspberry and plum flavors, rich, but with good acid to keep it fresh. It is probably the best generic AOC Beaujolais I have tried.

Never had a Prun, but I will look for it

Ever have the 2008 Vissoux or Brun? That’s all that Chambers had, not the 2007. I’ll post notes next week when I try them.
