2007 Jarvis Winery Merlot - USA, California, Napa Valley (11/30/2010)
The aroma is full of vanilla extract, graham cracker, some tar, a little tobacco and cherry. It’s obvious the wine has a great oak influence. However, it’s not overtoasted nor smoky; it’s not overextracted nor overripe (which are red flags for me in a wine made in this style). It just happens to be more present now due to its youth. It is still a very elegant wine that is extremely rich. Furthermore, as it opened the fruit began to peak through. Mainly black cherry with a pleasant spice on the finish; processed chocolate (tootsie roll). Complex wine. Long, long finish. Best California Merlot I have had in recent memory. My score reflects my prediction of how this wine will age. 91 now; 93-96 over the next decade.
Decanted 1 hour, consumed over 3 hours. (94 pts.)
