TN: 2007 Jaffurs Syrah Verna's (USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County)

Dark inky color to it. Concentrated nose of dark fruits, maple syrup, some black licorice and black olives (along with a tinge of alcohol coming through underneath everything.) Full bodied, thick wine, very rich and full on the palate with the dark fruits really coming through along with some underlying tones of mocha permeating throughout. This all leads to a very long finish filled with black pepper and some heat (from the alcohol.) Nice dose of tannins and acid to balance all the fruit in this wine. Well done. My only reservation with this is the alcohol that kept popping up, it just seemed to take away from the wine a bit.

Better, worse, or same as date it was purchased?

I would say better…for now.

The Verna’s bottling has long been my favorite of the Jaffurs Syrah’s. That being said…this is probably low man on the totem pole from all the vintages I’ve had to date (2004 – 2008.) Just a much bigger wine all around than those of previous years….

Cool. Good to know. [cheers.gif]
