TN: 2007 Edmunds St. John That Old Black Magic

2007 Edmunds St. John That Old Black Magic - USA, California, Sierra Foothills, El Dorado County (8/14/2014)
Alas that I did not buy cases of this wine on release. Woe is me! This is just spectacular, with dark berry fruit, leather, earth and warm herb aromatics and a subtle creamy aspect on the palate. Just a wow wine that is really hard to stay away from. Fan-freaking-tastic!

Thanks for the note. 2 bottles in the cellar. Sounds like it’s time to take a look.

No rush, but yeah.

I kept buying and drinking, buying and drinking, I was left with only one bottle when the music stopped.

Finally popped one of these Sunday night. It followed on the heals of a 2009 Montervertine Montevertine which is a tough act to follow. Big transition away from the redder fruit and an appreciable step down in acidity.

Once given a chance to open…the tobacco laden, leathery, earthy, savory dark Syrah fruit emerges. Unctuous without being gloppy or overblown. Supple supportive tannins. Moderately long finish with plenty of secondary notes. No heat. No sign of interfering oak. Every bit as tasty (possibly more!) on night two. Relatively youthful and quite integrated. Easy to drink…on the verge of gluggable. Not sure whether to drink or hold the last bottle…plenty of life ahead.

Served with grilled cheddar cheeseburgers. Fine pairing.

Glad you enjoyed it Richard. I have one left.

What’s the blend or grape?

Syrah & Grenache if I recall correctly.

71% Syrah, 29% Grenache
