TN: 2007 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  • 2007 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (3/5/2012)
The 2007 Pierre Usseglio Châteauneuf-du-Pape continues to puzzle me slightly. When I first opened it, it seemed over-extracted and almost spoofed, but with air, the wine got leaner, more nuanced, and more focused. For now, the fruit is still very primary and dominated by kirsch and heavy duty black licorice. There’s also some leather, tar, and even some cracked pepper. The complexity is definitely there. I only worry about the fruit and alcohol in this particular bottling. Only time can tell how this one will turn out by the time it reaches maturity. Assemblage was 80% Grenache, the rest Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault.
