TN: 2006 Saxum Broken Stones

  • 2006 Saxum Broken Stones - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (2/28/2009)
Gorgeous wine. Double decanted and then took to a steak house, I wanted a big young wine to stand up to the steak and this delivered. Huge nose of black cherry, smoke, game. Massive wine, but any heat that would be there is hidden well by the fruit. Very tasty and concentrated (although not as much as the '05 which was unreal.) Dark fruits really showing with just a touch of sweetness. Loooooong finish with a bit of a spicy kick and great backbone to it. I personally think this wine will age quite nicely.

Agreed. A great wine. I was surprised how big a wine this was, even for Saxum. I wonder when it calms down just a bit.

I thought the JBV was just a tad softer, but both of these were awesome.
I should keep some in the trunk

Great notes, Yoni. I had this in October when Justin Smith came to NY with his '06 lineup and found the Broken Stones to be the most approachable and drinking beautifully.
