TN: 2006 Ridge Zinfandel Nervo (USA, California, Sonoma County)

  • 2006 Ridge Zinfandel Nervo - USA, California, Sonoma County (3/5/2013)
Big, compelling nose right from the moment the cork leaves the bottle…settles down a bit as the wine gets some air. Crimson in the glass, showing a bit more age visually than the bouquet would suggest. On the palate, this is still full of fresh wild berries with a light peppery note underneath. The finish is smooth and clean. This ranks up there with some of the best Ridge zins I’ve had. Really yummy. The empty glass gives off scents of baking spice and warm turbinado sugar. Again, yum! Been thru a case or more of the 1996, always liked this wine.

Wish I had a case of this!

Do you know anyone else who makes wine from this vineyard?

There used to be a NervoWnry there on the property…but that is long kaput.
I believe Ridge farms the vnyd themselves and takes all the grapes from there.

The Nervo Ranch consists of some 250 acres in Geyserville. It is owned by the Trione family, who rebuilt the old stone winery visible from 101. They own a total of 660 planted acres on five sites in Northern Sonoma County. Since their production is around 5000 cases, they sell the majority of their fruit.

Very interesting, Allan. Thanks!

Even more interesting is that I went to the Trione website and it appears that they only harvest cabernet from Nervo, for their Red Wine cuvee. Nothing on there about zinfandel at all.

When I walked Nervo, which is on the West side of 101 across from WhittenRanch/Geyserville, with DaveGates,
my impression was that they farmed that block and were the only ones to take Zin from it. That would be what
would be called the Caboose block (from this friggin’ caboose sitting out there on the hillside in the middle
of the vnyd) I guess. I didn’t realize there was additional Nervo vnyds in the area.

I’m sure you guys know much more about this than I do. Just snooping around a bit, it appears that the ‘Caboose’ block is bottled separately from the ‘Nervo’ designated bottling. It’d be interesting to do a side-by-side and see how they differ.

Anyway,I appreciate the info from both of you. Thanks.

Andy

I agree, Tom. I don’t know if the Caboose is the only Zin - I kinda doubt it. Ridge made an ATP Zin from it - not sure if they still do.

I just looked at their website - no sign of Nervo or Caboose.

I think Starry Night Winery is getting the fruit now.

Bet they do a good job too, every Zin I have tried I really liked.

Is this an ATP bottling?

Yep.

Hey Andy, I’ve got some Caboose left over purchased direct from Ridge as one of their library offerings last year. Shoot me a PM and I’d be happy to send you a bottle at cost if you’d like to make that side-by-side comparison happen.
