TN: 2006 Quinta de Cabriz Dão Colheita Seleccionada (Portugal, Beiras, Dão)

  • 2006 Quinta de Cabriz Dão Colheita Seleccionada - Portugal, Beiras, Dão (6/5/2009)
A solid wine in the low end of the “very good” category. Decanted for about 30 minutes. NOT NEARLY ENOUGH, as it improved substantially over the next 3 hours. I did not like the nose because I found it alcoholic, which was a surprise because the ABV was only 13%. the palate was much better than the nose. As it developed, there were red berries, tart cherry and pepper with a bit of some other spice I could not put my finger on . . . possibly allspice. Mouth feel was smooth with less astringent tanins than I expected. Color was very dark. One of the CT notes says the wine was a bit “port-like” with a questionmark. Good call when one of the three grapes int he blend is Touriga National, which is the principal grape in most ports. I have noticed that flavor in other Touriga National non-fortified wines from Portugal, and looked for it here. It was very faint and mixed with the cherry fruit. This wine was a gift and I do not know what it costs, but I would characterize it as a very nice every day drinker for a dinner with red meat if it can be had for under about $10. (85 pts.)
