TN: 2006 Peju Province Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Bottled

  • 2006 Peju Province Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Bottled - USA, California, Napa Valley (11/22/2010)
This was so tight and closed. Opened and poured. The nose was alcohol and so was the taste. after about 30 minutes the bose started to ease up. It was still so tight, and after another hour the nose started coming around and there was eucalyptus, fig, and damp earth. After another 30 minutes, the taste started showing up and it was like that children’s book were the caterpillar eats through all the fruit. It was black fruit, plums, figs, blackberry, and any other black fruit there could be. it was so one dimensional and overpowering, almost like a zinfandel should taste. (87 pts.)

Nice to see a note on Peju, and I agree with your comments regarding their Cab - rather one dimensional has been my experience as well. Not normally a fan of CA Merlot, I actually find theirs quite good - certainly better than their Cab in my estimation.

The only good thing about Peju is their rapping pourer. Not sure if he’s still there, but they’re worth a visit just to see him.

A few years ago I had a cab franc from the '90s ('94 I believe) that was phenomenal, and easily better than the few cab sauvs of theirs that I’ve had.

Guys - I completely agree that they 06 cab is tight and rather 1 dimensional. I am a bigger fan of their cab franc, but Reserve stuff can get rather expensive… Todd the merlot & their “50/50” blend is also pretty good stuff.

Forgot about the Cab Franc - that is their best stuff

Agreed.

My other favorite Peju is Lisa Peju. flirtysmile

I recently had the Cab Franc Persephone vineyard and was blown away. It was I thought one of the better Cab Francs I have had in a while.

Just FYI, Peju sent out an email today with an offer for their '05 and '06 Rutherford Reserve cabs - 50% off, use coupon code CSR50

tough call between the cab francs & lisa, both are amazing! the sauv blancs are pretty tasty as well.

the rapping pourer was there in july when we stopped in, was not very impressive…

Haven’t been tasted Peju in a while as the wines, to me, were getting bigger, more one-dimensional, with increasing levels of heat every year. Is the rapping pourer the same as the yodeling pourer that was there 3-4 years ago?

+1 on the Peju merlot comment. We opened a 2004 last week and thought very highly of it. I have been disappointed in a few of their wines (2005 estate cab, all the zins, etc) but everytime I think about dropping out of their club, I have a wine that is good and I stay in. I’m one of the few people that found Peju not by visiting their tasting room (in fact had I went there first, sure I would have ruled them out as it has been described as very touristy) but had a bottle at a restaurant in Texas and ejoyed it so much I joined their club, then upgraded clubs a few times and now am in the library club.

Can’t remember the exact lineup now but we opened a 2002 estate cab along with several other wines (all new world and mostly CA cabs of similar age) and tasted blind earlier in the year with the Peju being an overwhelming favorite.
