TN: 2006 Neyen Syrah Limited Edition

  • 2006 Neyen Syrah Limited Edition - Chile, Central Valley, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley (2/4/2009)
Very opaque violet and garnet. Nose was nice, dark blue fruit, cinammon, a little funk. But, unfortunately the fruit did not carry over on the palate, a bit absent, with the mid palate carried by all spice, tar, oak/vanilla before the tannins kicked in and it finished out bone dry. I think this may have been a bit closed down with the way the fruit behaved despite being decanted for 14 hours. Otherwise, it was also a bit out of balance with the heat overwhelming the finish. Is using the words “limited edition” on wines something new?

I gave that an eyeball too. I kept thinking of the guys pimping baseball cards on QVC.

A friend of mine said he heard good things about it, a touch of old world so I gave it a whirl. It has a touch of old world, however its just too out of balance on the fruit and alcohol. Btw, at the 30-40 price point, its a pass.

Sounds like it would be a pass at half that price as well. Thanks for the note.

I was talked into buying a couple of these from a local retailer who visited the winery and was impressed with the place. I’m not even a big fan of syrah to begin with so reading this note is even more disappointing.
