On a lark, I pulled a bottle of MD COL out of the cabinet last night with the attitude of why not. Didn’t do the shake in bottle, but rather poured into a captain’s decanter and swirled it for a good two minutes to get rid of the dissolved nitrogen.
The color is still an opaque purple with some serious viscosity. The nose is full of violets, dark fruits and bacon fat…it has lost that medicinal high ETOH bite that was on the younger bottles. No real heat on the palate and the oak is starting to be tamed. It is still there to be sure. Very concentrated flavors of blueberries, roasted game and earth. While the bottle wan’t hot, I do believe the stated alcohol is too low. After finishing my half of the bottle, I had a nice buzz working. Guessing it is over 17 or 18 percent.
All in all, very suprised by the showing and take back some of the bashing on this wine.
