– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over a few hours –
NOSE: the bouquet on this started-off with off-putting vegetal/oxidated aromas – thankfully, these disippated after a couple hours of airtime; after a couple hours this improved drastically: spicy with a slight citrusy lift; rather prounounced note of cinnamon as well as an interesting combination of anise and horehound candy.
BODY: superfine particulate matter suspended in the wine; color is garnet with a shade of purple throughout; color is of medium-deep depth; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: this puppy needs some serious time in the cellar: tannic with a full earthy palate of figs and serious embedded minerality … also hints of sandalwood and cedar; long finish (55-60 sec.) suggests room for improvement; label says 14% alc., but it seems closer to 15%. Hold.

So this is the CdP of the CdR you rave about, right?
WTF is “horehound candy”? [imnewhere.gif]
yeah, it is … the CdR is much better, IMO.
horehound candy is a hard candy that derives its flavor from leaves of the horehound plant and lots of sugar. It tastes rather bitter and gross (similar to molasses, is the closest thing I can think of) … some people, such as my father, love the stuff. (on a barely-if-at-all related note: I actually like black licorice)
Interesting. You learn something new everyday. [thank_you.gif]
I agree with your note on this. I opened one about a month ago and poured it into the decanter and then was called away till the next morning, I decided to leave it alone till that night, so it had a full 24 hrs. It still could of used some more time!!! I’m gonna leave the rest alone for a few years- I think they’ll be well worth the $30 I paid for them.
Horehound candy.
My mom was from the sticks of Missouri so I learned about some funny things growing up since it was old timey country and just enough of the South to get a good mix. But for some reason that’s a new one.
… and another … this one with 48+ hours of air … air does this wine good.

– tasted non-blind on Day 3 –
– 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre –
NOSE: a very “dark” aromatic profile with thick fig paste, gentle garrigue, and heavy smoked meat sticks; hints of musky spicebox and citrus add complexity; complex bouquet.
BODY: lots of fine particulate matter suspended in the wine; dark garnet color of great depth; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: this TN is based on the last glass from the bottle – the bottle was opened 51 hours ago. This was a “big” wine on Day 1, and was too bitter for my tastes. The extended air-time did this wine good: very spicy and smoky – smoked meat sticks from NOSE are repeated on the palate; full palate; plenty of fine-grained tannins, even on Day 3; alcohol comes through a little bit; long finish (55-60 sec.); this has the goods to age well, and in my opinion needs that age. Hold.

2006 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (4/23/2018)
– Coravin-ed –
– tasted non-blind over a couple hours –
NOSE: expressive; red-fruited; leathery; garrigué/CdP goodness!; cherry/raspberry cordial; grape soda after a couple hours.
BODY: lots of fine particulate matter present; impenetrable blood red color of great depth; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: bitter; medicinal red fruits; alcohol stands-out a lot; the alcohol presence makes this tough to like; a difficult conundrum here: this is ageing nicely as far as the aromatics go, but seems to be progressing poorly with respect to flavor; this did improve over the course of a couple hours (in the glass, and, I suppose, my palate getting used to the wine), but it nonetheless remained quite alcoholic. Hopefully this is in an awkward stage right now.
{will update this note when we drink the remainder}
50, 5, 13, 13, 6 = (87 pts.)
update: pulled the cork last night. Immediate drain pour. Oxidized. And the wine underneath the oxidation still wasn’t good, either. Maybe 5 weeks was too long to let this sit after the Coravin? Maybe I didn’t use enough gas when using the Coravin? (I was extremely judicious with it).
