2006 Domaine du Colombier Crozes-Hermitage - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage (1/16/2010)
So much sulfur on this it’s really hard to cut through to the wine itself, even after several hours of decanting. Will come back to it tomorrow, but tonight this is a very brooding and reserved wine, not thin or light bodied, but not a lot of fruit to grab onto, with a somewhat bitter finish that I attribute to the high SO2 level. The overall balance is quite nice, if this can shed the sulfur cocoon, there might be a very nice syrah lurking underneath, will report back later.
Night 2: the nose is cleaner, but the palate has still got a large dose of coffee, with its accompanying bitterness. Maybe this is a wine that blossoms in the bottle after a decade, but I’m not going to be buying any more to find out. (84 pts.)
