TN: 2006 Domaine De Montille Volnay Les Taillepieds

2006 Domaine De Montille Volnay Les Taillepieds: Initially opened to a bit of bottle funk and general discordance. This just took a couple of minutes to blow off and I would say that decanting would be advisable though not entirely necessary. At first clenched red fruit and some chalky minerality were the substance and should of the wine and it was very nice. As time went on the.prodigious nature of this wine began to unfold. I swear the color of this wine deepened over time too. Layers of dark fruits built on the red fruited frame and the minerality morphed into stone and fine iron shavings. Tannins emerged and the wine became a powerhouse and ass kicker. Long, suave and big while still keeping a death hold on its Cote De Beaune roots. This was really stinking delicious and memorable over the last half of the bottle. Clearly has the pedigree and the bones to go for ages.

Great note, Jim,

It really brings the wine to life. Any thoughts on '06 more generally? Or don’t you think it worthwhile to make that sort of generalization?

I ask since they don’t seem to get much love. But they, and fortunately the '05’s, are what was on offer when I began buying and cellaring wine again, and I have actually found them to be pretty interesting, though I have not cracked so many. I continue to pick them up when I can–price, producer and so on being promising.

Jim, as a PN producer yourself, I admire your passion for great Burgs too. I’ve know some producers to virtually stop buying and drinking wines other than their own. Great notes, thanks. I love the vineyard transparency and fruit purity of the Montilles. I just wish I owned more than the 10 btls or so I have.

Thanks for the note. I have some of these resting. Perhaps I should open and see. The 1995s are wonderful right now.
