2006 Carter Cellars Hossfeld Coliseum - USA, California, Napa Valley (1/23/2010)
One hour decant. Pours an opaque crimson red. Nose is still very tight, revealing hints of red fruit, some strawberry, charred oak and sandlewood. Palate hits you with a wall of tannins, but give you glimpses of what promises to be a good wine, as the quality of the fruit is evident. The juicy red fruit peaked out more as it sat in the glass and presented a dramatic difference to the bottle of Herman Story that was consumed prior to this. 14.1% abv is a nice treat and makes this wine that begs for a juicy cut of red meat to balance out the tannins in its youth. Very impressed with the well developed midpalate and 30 second finish. Looking forward to trying again in a couple years. 91 now, but likely to gain a point or two with time. (91 pts.)
