TN: 2006 Carlisle Syrah Sonoma County (USA, California, Sonoma County)

  • 2006 Carlisle Syrah Sonoma County - USA, California, Sonoma County (10/5/2013)
Brief decant. Could have used 60-120 minutes of air. Initial roughness has softened with some age. Red and dark fruit. Nice and smooth. Good balance. A bargain at the $22 release price, all in with tax and shipping. (90 pts.)

Love this wine. I have lots and lots of Carlisle and I am very happy about it. I had two this week and both were outstanding!

I had a bottle of this in my hand on Thursday but we didn’t drink it so back into the cellar it went. So you say this has softened up enough now to drink, Jay?

I think that because of the low price, I don’t give these bottlings the age they probably need. Will try to be more patient!

We had this last week and I thought it was drinking very well and scored it a tad higher. Wonderful balance and no heat. Enjoyed by everyone at the table. I had forgot about the low price!

Mike’s wines all need patience and especially the syrahs.

I do not know if I would say “need.” I certainly enjoy the zinfandels right out of the styro delivery box, and the syrahs soon thereafter, but I agree that the syrahs continue to improve with age. I have not yet had one that is on the down slope.

I enjoy Mike’s wines when young.

BUT … When you give either his zins or syrahs some years (6 or more) They take on magical qualities.

Finally opened one of his petites - an 02. Well worth waiting for and confirmed Mike’s drinking window of 05 -18. I saw no sign of it going over the hill any time soon.

As Steve said, my definition of ‘need’ equates with ‘magical qualities’. champagne.gif
