2006 Bilancia Syrah la Collina - New Zealand, North Island, Hawkes Bay (12/13/2009)
Combined note from two bottles at different times, but quite consistent.
Nice color, not too dark and a nice glow to it. Clean nose with grape soda and some peppery notes. Lovely balance right off the block. Dark plum fruit with some nice spice and chypre notes. Medium finish that continues on the same line. Not complex, but good drinking.

I eventually loved the '05…
Bilancia la Collina Syrah 2005
I’ve gotta say the nose is slightly disappointing (dumb) to start with and you really have to work it to get what the liquid is all about. Perhaps a model of restraint but then some wow… out pops some ethereal perfume of cherry stones, framboise, herbal notes, crushed white pepper and then in the background winter frost (??!! seriously), rose petals and a mineral tint – quite extraordinary. The medium bodied palate is even better with the most wonderful tapestry of texture, tannin, acidity, fruit purity, structure & amazing complexity for this to live for many years. Finishes very, very long. All about finesse rather than power. 14%vol.
I’ve not tried the '06.
This is a really nice wine but the regular for a fraction of the price is nearly the same.
