Enjoyed the 2006 Alesia Sonoma Coast PN last night. Popped and poured - Nice rich dark red color, nose of raspberry and light lemon, taste added cherry immediately and a little club soda and maybe a touch of cola. Some notes of the some bitter herbs as well. After it opened up, there was a pronounced meaty element added that elevated the whole experience. This was quite a good bottle.
john
Nice note
I’m glad I found this place
I am inspired to respond here
Great list to be on
Dr. K - Haven’t had the chance to enjoy your company since the “Showing the Love” Syrah/Shiraz-plus dinner at Canoe here in Atlanta a while back. My loss since I enjoyed your company and also since the Florida Gators won the National Championship and beat your beloved Dawgs again.
I hope you are well. Best, John
thats why i put out the troll
lean years for georgia fans
watch out this fall.
i keep talking with don about roadtripping
the whole mood here is so much nicer, i think i can reconnect with a bunch of old board friends
i did get a few magnums of rhys and alesia. you?
Rob - A got a couple of mags, naturally not the Hillside though. Let me know when you plan a trip down. It would be great to see you. Best, John
I had this last night, too. Didn’t take a note, but I loved the bright acidity. Good stuff!
I am currently flip flopping on whether I like the Sonoma Coast more or the San Mateo County.
Similarly, I lined up a 06 Kanzler and a 06 Green Valley and let them duel it out. Unfortunately, that battle is gonna go a few more rounds before someone emerges as the victor. The winner gets to take on the 06 Chileno in the 06 Alesia UWC bout (similar to UFC, but its contested in my glass as opposed to an octagon).
I’ll report back on my progress…
Lance - A good point. Both are very good. But the meaty element I had in the SC makes me think it will be the clear winner in time. Best, John
I’ve been tempted to open a bottle of this, but I never can seem to remember on a night when I can give it appropriate air time. I need to do that.
Right now, my preference is for the San Mateo . . . but by a very slim margin.
had the 2006 San Mateo Co the past couple of nights. looking for faults: maybe a smidge hot in the nose and the slightest astringency noted deep in the wine’s lengthy finish. there are those who find fault with Natalie Portman too i guess?
this is a CA PN with a nod towards Burgundy and a real achievement for the price point. the best domestic PN under $30, maybe? better on day 2 no question!
While it suffered to some of the competition, this was right in the running as one of the standouts at our Rhys dinner last month at Don’s.
As you allude to Glenn, crazy value. Drinking right now.
