2005 WesMar Pinot Noir Vintners Reserve - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (11/12/2009)
14.6% alcohol. A bit of a high alcohol number for WesMar. Opened two hours before drinking but not decanted. I thought this would have a bit more voluptuousness and drink better younger based purely on the alcohol percentage. Not the case. This is a highly structured wine and quite tight still. Very pretty black cherry color. Terrific nose of red cherry, baking spice, and earth. In the mouth, racy and linear, with no hint of heaviness or overripe characteristics. Brilliant red cherry that just cuts across the tongue. Delightful complexity and bright acidity. Long finish that does show a bit of warmth, as well as a touch of tannins. Another year or two away, at least. A-
