2005 Turley Roussanne LPR Alban Estate Vineyard- USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley (7/26/2014)
Had this from the winery a few years ago and opened a bottle on a whim tonight. This does not disappoint. Super cloudy almost reminds me of muddy water and unfiltered for sure. Very viscous and sweet. But with a citric acid kick. Lots of sweet apricot, tangerine oil, candied pineapple with a tart orange peel zest. A lovely finish that lasts. This is the most unusual visual wine I have seen but the taste is fantastic. Lip smackin’ good!! (95 pts.)
I don’t know I bought it at their Paso tasting room just 2 years ago. I am not on the mailing list. In fact it was not on the tasting list I just asked if they make any sweet wines and they brought it out
We were at the Paso tasting room last week and little comments and innocent questions were rewarded. I was very impressed at their attentiveness to our interest in their wine. In fact, the woman that was conducting our tasting (short dark hair, maybe in her late 40s) was probably the best tasting room attendant I’ve ever had the pleasure of pouring for me. I regret not complimenting her while we were there and hope someone reads this.
This must be the successor to a wine they used to call “White Coat” (named for ER docs). Not sure if that was all Alban fruit, but it was a big boy in a big bottle; too much really; 1-2 glasses were plenty. It sold for around $40 or a bit more.
Agree on your comments on the tasting room. I’ve developed a bad attitude about Paso tasting rooms, but this is a good one, especially compared to the old Pesenti operation. That had its historical attributes, but was really low end, tasting out of shot glasses.
I generally agree, though I would stop well short of “best tasting room attendant ever.” Their tasting room is well run and efficient, and a slightly formalistic style can be softened greatly by showing interest and asking questions. It’s great to be able to buy all their wines at list price there.
One of my favorite walk-in tasting rooms anywhere (I say that factoring in the wine and the buying opportunity as well as the visit experience).
I didn’t know Turley made this wine. I love Alban’s Rouussanne. It too is very cloudy. A shame Alban makes so little of it. I rarely get an allocation, but always request to have it added to my order if they don’t sell out. Sometimes I get lucky. It really is a lovely wine.
Yep I remember it being cloudy with chunks at the bottom. A little weird but man, tasty. On day 3 of drinking it and maybe have enough for two small glasses tonight with the wife. Can’t wait!!
Yeah, Jim…but those were Reidel shot glasses.
I think this wine was probably a one-off. They continue to make the WhiteCoat. I find it on the soft/fat/porky side.
I think EhrenJordan does a far/far better job w/ Alban fruit (Viognier in this case) than John or Turley do.
