TN: 2005 Realm Cellars The Tempest (USA, California, Napa Va

  • 2005 Realm Cellars The Tempest - USA, California, Napa Valley (7/16/2010)
Super dark and luxurious, this is pure and precise. Nose has all black-cherry and cassis with some cedar box and soy. Wonderful mouthfeel that is medium in body and plush, kirsch and black plum. Tannins are bulky but aligned and still in need of resolving. I have always been a fan of this one from the Realm 05 lineup, more so than any any merlot heavy vintage on either side of the vintage. As a matter of fact, this is the Tempest with the most (52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 18% Petit Verdot.) Cabernet Sauvignon in the history of the label (source: Coombsville). Some red cherries pop out toward the end of this. Very dimensional with tons of structure. Much more weight than my last time with it. Very nice indeed. (94 pts.)

Just following your lead…
Look who’s calling the baller a…aw, forget it. newhere

Truth is, I have been thinking of opening a Realm since I seen your mention. I wanted the 2004 Tokalon, but could not find it. Its in there…

Please do try the To Kalon soon and report back. I have one bottle and can never decide if it would be a good time to open it.

Bruce,

I opened one the other night with some steaks and it was rockin’. Could certainly develop a few more years but have no fear in opening one now.

Thanks Phil. I have a couple steakhouses in the plans for the next 2 months. I will take it to one of them.

BTW - Have you had a 2004 Farella lately? I still have 2 of those. The last one I had was almost 3 years ago and that was waaaaay too young. So I have been reluctant to open another one. But perhaps they are ready now.

I’ve not had one lately. I actually thought I was opening that bottle the other night but caught a surprise about half way through my first glass.

Grabbed a bunch of 06 Farellas on WB last month.
I think the 04s are the backward vintage of the group. I have a few Crane and a handful of ToKalon. I might have to look a bit harder for that ToKalon now…

Opened a bottle of the '04 “Phoenix” and it was gorgeous…the type of wine that might actually change my habits on aging certain wines.

Cheers!
