2005 Futo OV- USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville (11/25/2009)
These are changing well. Decanted for 2 1/2-3 hours. Dark fruit on the nose with softening oak. Palate is dark blackberry, black cherry, french vanilla, mild olive and some bramble. Mid-palate is softer than expected with some round tannin. The finish is long. Give it time and these will come around. Expensive- yes. Overpriced- maybe. But a nice bottle nonetheless. (93 pts.)
Must have been a night for trying Futo. I tasted the 2004 Futo last night at a pre Thanksgiving party last night that was a cult cab lovers dream. Futo,Colgin,Bryant,Bond,Shafer HJSS and many others. Since it was a party I did not take notes but my impressions on the 2004 Futo were very similar to Eric’s. It was a very good Napa cab that had a richness and softness that made it very appealing. It was not by any means a WOW wine but was typical of so many of the overpriced Napa Cabs out there.
BTW my favorite cab of the night was the 2004 Colgin IX Proprietary Red Estate. Tremendous depth of flavor yet balanced with a finish that was endless. More often than not these wines do live up to their reputation.
How did you get the 04 Futo Jim, I thought that wine was not released. The 05 was the first offering. They only had a small quantity of the 04 and it was never offered to my knowledge.
I did not bring the wine. Might well have been the 2005 Futo. There were quite a few Cabernets from 2003 to 2005 vinatges I probably forgot which year it was.
