2005 Domaine des Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun) Fleurie- France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie (7/29/2013)
This was a surprisingly disappointing bottle of wine. The fruit was dried out and hollow, with just astringent back end grip. Frankly it was not worth drinking. Too bad.
That is sad to hear. I was hoping these improved with time. The 2009 was great on release so I reloaded. Tried it recently and it was terrible! Like a bad, cheap Bourgogne, extremely acidic with no fruit. Thought I saw a glimmer of hope after several hours of air, but by the time I tried the rest two days later it was totally shot. A 2011 ancienne recently was excellent. Do these Brun crus not age? I thought he recommended aging these several years?
I opened an 09 on the fourth of July and it was amazing. I’ve got one more plus a few Morgons and Moulin A Vents. I don’t really care for Gamay, but this was really good.
I only cellared about a dozen bottles of 2005 past age 5. There’s now 5 bottles left. 2009 on the other hand. There’s a lot more of those lurking in the cellar. We’ll see what happens.
Those who are never quite sure about which vowels go where.
The 09s will be interesting. I loved them, but the acids aren’t that high in some, so I would guess some will crack up – after providing several years of great pleasure.
I tried the '10 a few months back and it was pretty good, nice tart red fruit. I do recall a bit of astringent grip on the back end like the OP mentions.
John, that 2009 Brun Fleurie is showing nothing but acid right now. I didn’t find all that many of the 2009s to be flabby. Fleshy, yes, but with decent acid. I have a Roilette (not tardive) scheduled to open soon, and that was always a very nice wine.
That’s funny, Michael. I found the 09 Brun Fleurie to be far more open with a nice sappy snap to it. Went through 5 of my 6 pack within months, holding on to just one. The '09 Roilette Cuvee Tardive, OTOH, I popped one, thought it too closed, and stuck them in the back of the Bojo section of my storage. The '11 was far more open, as was the '10 Griffe du Marquis. I intended to hit the storage locker to pull out an '09 Roilette just to check in.
Robert I agree that the Brun Fleurie was sappy drank well early. I went through maybe four bottles that were all very nice. Saw a good price and reloaded. So its only in the past few months that I think it has shown poorly, and I hope it to be just closed. The Roilette I liked but also saw potential for age and I have a few each of the regular and tardive in my cellar. I have been considering the '11 or '12 bought haven’t bought either yet. Anyone have thoughts on the '12s? Vissoux’s basic beajolais is available locally and I may pick one up today to see if it gives a peak at the vintage.
I have ordered Roilette’s Cuvee Tardive and the Griffe du Marquis in 2011. Have only tried the former, and liked it much. I have really liked almost every '11 that I have tried, most recently some more Thivins, Boulands and Vissoux. Even reloaded again this week. I have not tried or ordered any '12s, but noticed that Crush as the Roilette. I probably will, but need a little breather!
Interesting. '05 was the first year I bought any Beaujolais intending to cellar it. A lot of people were recommending Brun and I tried the whole lineup, but frankly I thought they were too astringent and not that enjoyable even then, so I didn’t go back for more.
