A really pretty wine, exhibiting florals, clove spice, red berries and a stony quality on the bouquet. Serious and structured yet elegant, with real sap to the fruit. Approachable now with pop and pour, though as always the last glass was best. Very refined and classy juice.
The 2002 of this wine taught me that beauty is more important than power (at least for me).
Is it correct that only Barthod’s vines in Veroilles are designated Premier Cru? Anyone know how that came to happen? I read it in one of Coates’ books.

Berry, I had a 2002 Clair Marsannay ‘Vaudenelles’ with lunch yesterday, it was not powerful but beautifully perfumed and earthy, Peter’s descriptor of stony could also well and truely apply to this wine.

I have some of the bottles of this from the 2007 vintage en route. Not expecting blockbuster, but hoping for a really pretty wine. I’ll post here if I try one early.

From the 1er cru portion, Barthod’s wine is structured for long aging, and shows its proximity to Bonnes Mares, IMO. Generally one of her best wines, but for the patient.
