TN: 2005 Croix de Beaucaillou

  • 2005 Croix de Beaucaillou - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (4/28/2009)
This is a very good and quintessentially Bordeaux wine. Black currant/cassis, cherries, some briary notes, earth, a hint of tobacco. Drinks amazingly well right after popping and pouring and held up fine overnight. Never shut down, always remained ready to drink. Didn’t materially change from night one to night two and was a pleasure wine all the way through. On the ripe side for Bordeaux, but definitely still nice and fresh, and not a bit blowsy. I liked this a lot and it’s a very good second wine to be sure. The Chapelle de la Mission is a better wine in 2005 in my opinion, and more age-worthy. This Croix de Beaucaillou could be kept for 5-10 years, I’m sure, but this is drinking so well right now that I think I’ll finish mine off in the next year or two.

I really like this wine and it has grown on me over the past 6 months or so. Now, I wish I had grabbed the large quantities available at Costco around here for around $30. I will be interested to see if this ages well - assuming I can keep my hands off my remaining stash. I suspect it will age better than most people seem to think, but it drinks well now with air. I wonder if it will ever develop those secondary BDX aromas and taste? Still contemplating buying more, even at a higher price

I am sitting on a case and have had around six bottles since release last year. I think for the dollars, it provides very good short term enjoyment. I don’t have any experience to comment on its aging potential though.

Thanks for the notes. I’ve got a couple of mags of the '03 in my cellar. Any experience/idea about these?
