TN: 2005 Clos Saint-Michel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  • 2005 Clos Saint-Michel Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (1/11/2010)
Still a young CdP, but highly approachable now. Dark color, substantial nose of rocky soil, grilled meat, pepper, touch of heat. Dark fruits, rather sweet and quite massive, but probably apropos for the vintage. Big mouthfeel, a bit hot with the alcohol, raw meat (iodine, some salinity), and blackberries come through on the finish. A nice buy for $22.00. (89 pts.)

Interesting. Never had a wine from that Domaine although they have apparently some 15ha.

Did anyone have the “Reserve” or the “Grand Clos” (100% Mourvedre) and can provide some insight ???

Cheers
Christian

On day 2, this wine is much better. The structure is there, but it seems to have also filled out and integrated a bit, and the fruit is very luscious and sweet without being ‘stewed’.
