2005 Château Léoville Poyferré - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (9/30/2022)
Decanted for 2 hours, back to bottle and followed over steak dinner. This was an "aha moment" wine.
Amazing nose. Leather, dusty earth, gravelly rock, deep red fruit that is starting to dry, think dried cranberries. Palate is medium body, lovely tannins that are fine grained, drying red fruit, cedar, tobacco, and leather. Beautiful structure with acid and tannin that provides a serious backbone. The finish is long and lots of crushed rock and red earth.
I have had mostly “eh” experiences with Bordeaux and never understood the hype. Now I do. This is absolutely phenomenal. I need to drink much more BDX from here out.
Drinking beautifully now with a 2h decant but will last another 10+ years in the cellar. (94 points)
