TN: 2005 Château Doisy-Védrines (France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes)

I admit that Gary V’s very enthusiastic 99 point rating of this wine made me curious --so, when I saw this on sale at Zachy’s for $19.99 a bottle I grabbed a few.
The wine has lovely aromatics - pineapple, banana peel, apricot, honey, vanilla, woodspice, and citrus. The palate doesn’t live up to the nose. I like that this is soft and light-bodied for a Sauternes, but am bothered by the low acidity which makes the wine comes across a little too fleshy. There’s some nice spicy botrytis which gives it some lift/dimension but the lack of acidity deprives this one of verve!! Solid finish.Still a lovely bottle - but not a back up the truck bottle for me. (92 pts.)

Kim, it’s that acidity that I also crave. Looking forward to the 07…if the prices are reasonable.

– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over 2 to 3 hours –
– 375mL –

NOSE: light, creamy orange; strong honey note; botrytis; light note of straw/hay.

BODY: medium amber color; full bodied.

TASTE: golden raisins; apricot; grilled plantain; fig; low to medium-low acidity; seems open, as it is pretty giving; nonetheless, it’s fairly remarkable that, even at 16 years of age – out of 375 mL --, this does not yet taste very aged. Drink or Hold.
