2005 Aubert Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (8/25/2012)
This is a powerful chardonnay, full of tropical fruit and meyer lemon, toasted hazelnut and smoked almond. Full throated but never going over the top, with sufficient acidity to back up its sweetness on the palate. It avoids being flabby or overwrought with oaky notes while grabbing the drinker and never letting go until its gone (and it’s gone too soon#. A real lipsmacker for sure. #95 pts.)

I think this is my favorite Aubert Chardonnay. Sadly, mine are gone. I drank a lot of it. I described it about a year ago as “lemon meringue pie.” All the sweetness, the lemon, the mouthfilling creaminess yet light at the same time and never overbearing. The flaky crust - all those toasty notes - all in a glass. Brilliant.
“Had” to drink the 2009 Lauren the other night as part of a wonderful dinner celebration. Mark Aubert had described it to me as the most complex Aubert Chard in my cellar, when I asked for a recommendation (the Auberts have a fine new winery a stone’s throw from my place). My table loved it, and we left not a single drop.
Hi Merrill,
Did they finally open their new spot?
Yes, I had an email about it just this week (as did other mailing list people). I have not been over, and do not know the details, other than it is appointment only. Nice to see you here, John.
