2004 Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Goldert - France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru (12/10/2023)
Eight years ago I opened a bottle of this wine, and it was brutally hot and undrinkable. Fast forward to this bottle, and it was rich, mature Gewurztraminer with no intrusion from the alcohol. Quite the turnaround, and one that was completely unexpected. Dark gold color, classic Gewurz aromas, and bit bit of a grilled/singed edge to the fruit from age. Added complexity, and was a fantastic match to our roasted pumpkin soup.
Gewurztraminer is something that always sounds good to me in theory, but in practice is almost always something I fail to enjoy. When fully dry, I tend to find them too heavy. When made with residual sugar in a more opulent style, they can get obnoxious in a hurry. Any Goldilocks versions you would recommend?
The upper tier Trimbach bottling Cuvée Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre (I know I messed up that spelling) as well as the Dirler-Cade versions.
Scott, the 2021 Zind Humbrechts are uncharacteristically bone dry (you can see the descriptions on the Zind Humbrecht website; K & L also has reviews by some critics). They may be too heavy for you, and they probably will be heavy, but they probably won’t be like any other Gewurztraminers around. Too dry for me but your mileage could vary.
I’ll give this a try, I certainly like Zind-Humbrecht wines generally. Don’t think I have ever had a Gewurtz from them.
