TN: 2004 Wagner-Stempel Riesling Vom Porphyr

Had a black mission fig pizza with baby arugula, gorgonzola cheese, applewood-smoked bacon and balsamic vinegar at a local BYOB tonight, and I thought this wine would be a nice match for the various flavors on the pie.

Very light yellow in the glass, with that “fruit cocktail over slate” nose that I find in riesling every once in a while. On the palate, bright acidity frames crisp white fruits, apples most prominently. Slightly dominated by the acidity right now - this was better on release, and may be in a bit of an awkward state right now, although with food it certainly holds up well enough - it’s acidity really only shows up when drinking the wine by itself. Off tonight’s showing, this wine still has years to go.

I adore this winery and still have hot had the Heerkretz which is their best site. Had some bottles of '04 and '05 Hollberg Spatlese and GG but never Heerkretz. Even had the Schuerebe Trocken. Thanks for the note.

Bob,

I strongly recommend you to buy 07 “Heergretz” and “Porphyr”.

Cheers,
Martin
