2004 Vieux Château Certan- France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol (9/13/2009)
We decanted this for about an hour prior to enjoying with grilled lamb, green beans with cremini and oyster mushrooms and a roasted garlic potato mash. The structure of this wine at this relatively young age is really quite incredible. The nose shows earth, cedar, plums and blackberries with a bit of a lilac note. On the palate, a medium body of dark fruit is still quiet behind a wall of fine grained tannins but you can tell that when the tannins resolve a bit more, perhaps in a few years, this will develop into something really special. Of the 2004 Bordeaux I have had to date, this is one of the better ones. (94 pts.)
Thanks for the note. This wine came up in discussion in a local wine board and I noted that the local (i.e., Philippine) distributor is retailing this at P12,850, which is equivalent to roughly US$268 -a ridiculous price, but it only goes to show how wildly good Bdx is priced in my country. I usually order/purchase my Bdx from select US wine shops - and, including all my added cost of flying this to Manila, I can still get it at half the local price. I can’t imagine who in my country would buy this wine at the local price.
Yup. Ridiculous prices for Bdx here, that’s why I order mainly from the US. I’m in France every so often, but for good/old vintages of top growths, the US has the best variety and prices by far.
Thanks for the note. I grabbed 3 of these intending on holding two of them for sometime down the road but took a peak at one and it was corked. Glad to hear the juice is good.
