TN: 2004 Two Hands Shiraz Angels Share (Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale)

  • 2004 Two Hands Shiraz Angels Share - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (7/15/2009)
This was an interesting wine…and it looks like I paid $25 for it which is a bit of a steal. At first, something very weird happened to this screw capped gem. I had in the fridge to cool down a bit, unscrewed the cap and poured and nothing came out. Hmm, what is a thirsty fella supposed to do…I looked at the top and noticed a fairly thick sludge that accumulated at the top. I cleared it out with a paper towel and poured a sample. Good but a little heat suggesting this should be cooled down a bit more. Once i got it to appropriate temps (say high 50’s) this was very good. Notes of tar, black and red fruits, pepper on the nose. On the palate more tar/creosote, just a hint of menthol, blackberry liqueur, a hint of underbrush plus a little touch of heat. This seems to have seen some acid addition but at cooler temps it seems well integrated. An outstanding $25 bottle wine. (91 pts.)

Nice note Tony, When I start drinking again (it might be tomorrow) I’ve got a bottle of the 04 Two Hands Bella’s Garden standing. Any thoughts on it?

BTW, I’ll be drinking with your brother this weekend…Why don’t you fly up to?

i thought he may be drinking with you this weekend…

Unfortunately no can do…have something planned on Sunday plus Friday night with some of Traci’s flight attendant friends…hmmm Tony plus 4 women on the loose…could be a good time for TV

Tony, have you had the 2006 Angel’s Share yet? Several cases have shown up at a local Costco for $20.

Bill - I haven’t. I bought some of these in the 04 vintage and then never purchased again. Not because they aren’t good, just kind of stopped buying Aussie wines at that point.

Exact same boat for me.

Good wine, we sold some.

I thought the '07 was a might fine bottle~

They are one of the very few Aussie producers that I still really enjoy and believe in.

Tony, I’m glad you enjoyed the wine…I sure have over the past few years, but I thought it was better a couple of years ago. I still have a couple more in the in the cellar, which will be going down soon.

I always thought this bottle and the John Duval Entity Shiraz were pretty good, though arent both priced nearer $35 now?

Looks like I still have some 02 Lily’s Garden that probably needs to be consumed. Omelets tonight, so good combo.

Peter - a quick check of Wine Searcher shows pretty wide availability of the 07 at $24-30+. If quality is still the same and price is mid $20, then it’s probably a pretty good buy.

Two Hands is my favorite Aussie producer, and Angels Share is my “go to” bottle. First, it is delicious, second, it is affordable ($20 currently at WineX), and third, the screw cap. I sincerely appreciate the diversity of the Garden Series as well, but little pricy for every day.

We had Michael Twelftree in the store today for a tasting of about 12 of his wines for our customers. He is one of the great wine producers of Australia. 2007 Aphrodite was off the charts as was Zippys.
