TN: 2004 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select

  • 2004 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select - USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District (2/19/2011)
My first 04 SHS. This is outstanding. Dark purple in color with expressive nose. Blackberry, currant and graphite with a touch of expresso. Seemless as it moves through the mid palate. Almost like waves and it slides into a velvety long finish. This really hit it’s peek with 3 hrs of being open. Tannins were well integrated. This is the total package. Drink now with a few hours of air or hold another year or two. (96 pts.)

My WOTY so far…

Fred,

Thanks for the note.

Tried one just after release (always good at that point) and hid the rest away so I would not be tempted. May have to unearth one soon.

Fred,

Thanks for the great note. I have had 2 bottles during the last 2 thanksgiving dinners and I agree with you that it is an excellent wine. I have several more bottles and planning on not opening them for a few more years.

I am looking forward to when the 2007 is released.
