TN: 2004 Schild Estate Shiraz (Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley)

  • 2004 Schild Estate Shiraz - Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley (11/18/2020)
Famed 2004 vintage, I decanted for about 3 hours prior to a virtual drink up. It had some sediment so there was some prep work. In the glass its dark ruby and garnet, no browning or orange that I could see, just some slight thinning. Otherwise its pretty opaque and dense, good legs. The nose is dark fruit, leaning black, licorice, and mint/menthol, some smoke. It opened up even more over the next 3 hours and it got more complex; smoke turn spice notes (baking spice?). The front was blackberry as the front-runner, eucalyptus, a touch mint, white pepper, it gets more forward as time passes/ opens up further. Not out of whack, just more pure. the middle hold medium+ acid with the fruit mellowing and tannins kicking in with some grip. The back holds that bite with the fruit as the anchor and rides out nicely, well integrated and balanced however maybe a bit shorter than preferred. No burn. Its a good bottle holding some age and giving. Its drinking well now and doesn’t have any more runway to improve. My other will go in the near future.

Nice note

Always liked the 04 vintage from Australia. Rivals 98 in my opinon.

Opened an 04 Noon reserve Shiraz last night and found it a satisfying drink with well resolved tannins, rich and complex with no overt alcohol. Not everyones cuppa but I love these. Drinkin’ down the stash.

what a blast from the past, we drank a bunch of the 2004 Schild, but finished them up years ago. Glad to hear its holding up well!
