TN: 2004 Saxum James Berry Vineyard (USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles)

2004 Saxum James Berry Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (2/16/2026)
Cellared since release, found it leaking a few months ago, and stood it up since. 38% syrah, 36% grenache and 26% mourvedre...decanted for sed, and back in bottle for an hour. The 04 Saxum spritz is totally gone after the decant...the wine is GORGEOUS! Very red fruited with liqueured wild berries, kirsch liqueur...still ripe and sweet, yet a nice lifted acid streak of cherry skins, really freshens the wine, seems younger than it is...the 16% abv does not show at all...the wine is totally integrated and balanced to a silkiness...totally diggin the red licorice...as well as the white pepper/cherry wood spices...dried tobacco leaf, cocoa powder, smoked bbq sauce...the tannins are still alive and kickin to the dry side...long long spicy, floral finish...this is a wonderful bottle of Saxum that totally satisfies! Last bottle in the cellar for me, but for you other 228 bottles in CT...you in for a treat! (95 points)

Really nice note, and glad to hear that the spritz is gone. I think I had my last 2004 five or six year ago, and there was still just a touch - but, it blew off and turned into a wine like you describe, and that I loved.
