TN: 2004 Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo (Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo)

Thoroughly enjoyed this from the first test sip at 3pm till the last drip at 9 tonight. I’m never sure I have the prefect Barolo pairing at our place as we never make Osso Buco and rarely lamb. Tonight this did seem to go pretty darn well with thick cut cast iron pork chops. This was the last of 3 btls for me and singing at nearly 14yrs in btl. PnP at 3pm and poured two glasses immediately in some larger Burg glasses. No need to decant except for the semi heavy sediment. We opted for careful handling of the btl. This is in its full on mature phase but showing no signs of fall off. The red fruit is still vibrant and the wine energized. But there are also exciting levels of; forest floor, mushroom, tar, tobacco and minerality. The nose was loaded with berries and roses. 14% Alc but unnoticeable by weight, flavor or smell. A complete wine and excellent drinking. If more 04’s were readily available, I’d own them. (94 pts.)

Thanks, Craig. Sounds excellent. I don’t own this wine, but do have singletons of the Costa Grimaldi and Nei Cannubi from that year. Is there a difference in winemaking between the normale and single vineyard baroli, e.g. heavier oak treatment?

Sounds good. Bought a fair bit of the 2010.

Popped one of these last night with a beef ragu dinner. Drinking really well. Lots of fruit and secondary tar, floral, earthy notes. Kind of on the young side for age 18…with a light smattering of tertiary qualities. Cooperative tannins and attractive balance. Pleasing length. Wish I had more.

maybe I need to try a bottle the 2004 Nei Cannubi or the 2004 Costa Grimaldi that are sleeping in the cellar?
