TN: 2004 Opus One

Decanted. With family without an ah-so and cork disintegrated. Tasted after an hour. Bright and rich cassis, light notes of green bell pepper emerged later on and a bit of tobacco. This was big but not overly hot and had a beautiful complexity and pure, still youthful fruit. Was surprised at how young this felt. A long, 40-sec finish. Tannins soft and supple but still present. 92.

Cork fell apart on a wine that’s only 2004? Wow. What kind of crappy corks were they using? Ten years is still a really young wine.

could have been storage, i’ve had some really good corks.

Not sure what type of cork except to say “crumbled.” storage quite possibly an issue but they drank youthfully. Out of stepdad’s cellar, which I believe is a styrofoam carton in his closet.

i’ve opened 15 year old Opus and had no issues, YRMV
