TN: 2004 Müller-Catoir Gimmeldinger Schlössel Rieslaner Spätlese (Germany, Pfalz)

  • 2004 Müller-Catoir Gimmeldinger Schlössel Rieslaner Spätlese - Germany, Pfalz (7/3/2009)
This is a truly outstanding riesling. Balanced palate with honey, pear, citrus, tart apple, light and not oppressive minerality, and an appropriate level of acidity. Color light. Finish moderate. The palate is strong. The minerality is interesting, almost like slate, but not quite. Alcohol is 10.5% and I like that - no stress from it and completely unnoticed. The mouth feel has a bit of creaminess to it and the wine feels a bit thicker than water in the mouth, but not syrupy. Not Riesling. Rieslaner. Huge distinction. Much higher natural acidity in Rieslaner than Riesling. A cross between Sylvaner and Riesling. Usually used for sweeter wines as the acidity is insane on drier wines. Makes great TBA and for cheap. Darting’s can be fun. The '01 of this made by Hans-Gunter Swhwarz is one of my all-time favorite wines.

Learn something new every day! I notgiced it on the label and wondered about it but figured it must have been a reference to a location - as in all the -er suffixes on the name of the town on German wine labels.
